To cry in the dark
Tears for a boy, who stood and watched the shelling of his home
For his anger, for his tears then sliding unheeded down his cheeks
That he was not old enough to hold a gun
And fight for his family and his country
Tears for a man, who had no time to cry
As he held a rifle and aimed it at his fellow man
In righteous ire and resolve, but still for the marks
It leaves upon the soul in remembrance
Tears for a lover, who weeps for friends who were old enough
And family that will never trouble his nights, lighten his days
For grave wrongs done, ignored by the world and press
Because once, to survive, politics happened
Selfish tears, feeling like the boy standing at the window
Filled with hopeless anger at circumstances that can never be changed
Hoping against hope that by listening, by being close and pressing skin to skin
That somehow his hurt might one day be less, and a taste of the lost innocence
Might return one day
